Basic Info - I am 29 nearing that 30 mark. I have been married for almost ten years to my high school sweetheart. We have three boys 8, 5, and 20 months. I just recently became a stay at home mom. Uhmmm... it's been an adjustment. We live in the Ozark Mountains of Missouri and love the scenery.
I began my faith in a Southern Baptist Church as a young teen. After I met my husband I began to attend his church (Disciples of Christ) since his dad was a minister. I began to question the theology of the church just after we married and decided that we would attend a Methodist Church. I think the draw was more the programs offered and not so much the theology, which is not that far of a jump from what we were attending. We are now back to Disciples Of Christ, his mom is a minister here locally. We are feeling some very heavy pressure (or divine pressure you could say) to spend these years here serving our church. We have spent the past three having our church serve us. We have started a couple of things so far and are on "teams" to help make decisions. I seem to be a little different from the ladies that have already posted, in that I have very little catholism knowledge or training. I think maybe we all feel the same adoration, love, and devotion to Jesus, so maybe you can still let me be a part? Right? Right?!
As far as feminism goes, I have truthfully feared it for most of my life. My mother was a silent pusher of the you-don't-need-a-man-to-take-care-of-you theory but at the same time wanting to make sure I married some one that could "take care" of me. I agree with the basic principle of having choices and the freedom the original women fought for, but turned off by "feminazies". I just think God created man and women to fit together like two pieces of a puzzle that includes friends, family, and children for some. I am excited to enlighten myself with more knowledge on the subject and definitely looking forward to the knowledge of all you ladies already experienced in the topic. Hi Emily! I'm really excited that you're joining us, and amen that we all have the same love for Jesus! :) I don't really know anything about the Disciples of Christ denomination, so I guess we're even there, but I love to learn and I'm excited that you'll be adding your perspective to the mix.
ReplyDeleteI'm your here help us balance out the religious background of all the members! And I totally understand about the Methodist Church - awesome at the activities (especially for kids and teens and one thing I still really like about that church) but often rather lax on the Theology and Tradition, but also big on the singing! I'm not really well versed in Catholicism either, just a book or two I've read recently, and all the questions Elizabeth has answered for me.
ReplyDeleteI think you've hit on a key point of "modern feminism". It's like the Sex and the City girls, all independent, etc., but when it comes down to it still trying to find the right man. It's an interesting paradox.
It is nice to "meet" you Emily! We are all sisters in Christ and balance and different points of view will make this book club so much fun!

ReplyDeleteIt's nice to meet another Disciples person - no one out East has heard of the denomination! (Which makes sense because it basically started in Kentucky and moved West.) And both your husband's parents are ministers? Wow!
I think it's awesome that you're feeling called to actively serve your church. Sunday school and youth group, along with camps and conferences, were so important to me as I was growing up, and I feel like I got so much out of it. At the same time, I watched my parents (particularly my mother) pouring so much into our church that it was a very good model. All that to say, definitely keep going to those board meetings, and thanks for the reminder that we're all called to serve our Christian community in some way! Glad you're here, Emily!
It will be great to have yet another perspective & I haven't read the book, but I don't think that it is going to be particularly Catholic.

Before we were married my husband and I talked a lot about how our love was supposed to extend to others, but I confess that I haven't thought about it much recently.
